From West Covina, California- Mrs. Hunter's First Grade Class - all age 6- decided to sponsor a Marine in Fallujah  after writing us at Homefront Hugs USA and they began by telling us what freedom means to them. We decided to share their story with you to remind us all that sometimes the greatest wisdom and love comes from our youngest human beings.....

Freedom means:

" we can read anything and don't have slavery and we have the flag and the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell "     Adam

" being able to go anywhere "     Christina

" we can use money to buy what we want "     Andrew

" you can go outsides and not have bombs "     Ashley

" we are allowed to leave and go to other countries "     Brandon

" we have to help people "     Richard

" you don't have to hide "     La'Neice

" being happy and not in jail "      Edward

" people can get out of jail someday "     Erin

" you can work for whoever you want to "     Gabriel

" if you go to jail the cops let you out eventually "     Angel

" the United States has to fight sometimes "     Jenssier

" bad guys go to jail and good guys don't "     Joseph

" we can go anywhere and say what we want and not go to jail "     Precious

" you can play anywhere and say the Pledge of Alliegence "     Ryan

" The president has an eagle and a flag "     Samuel

" you don't have slaves "     Susan

" the soldiers fought for our country "     Rikki

This wonderful 1st grade class began writing and sending their love and support to MasterGunnery Sgt Elvin Vest - (seen above) a cook in the Marine Corps who likes to be called " Elgin " - deployed to Iraq shortly after marrying his lovely wife Becky In February of 2004.  MGSGT Elvin Vest was stationed at Camp Pendleton, with more than 26 years in the Marines, and left his seven children and wife reluctantly but with a sense of pride, duty and honor to join his fellow Marines in their efforts to bring democracy to Iraq.

MGSGT Vest started out as a cook and made lots of Marine Corps birthday cakes over the years. He has traveled all over the world and this is his 3rd time over in Iraq.

He works on a 3 Star General Staff and he goes where ever the General goes.
He is in Iraq in Fallujah - outside of Baghdad..He is there to make sure everyone is getting all their meals and hot chow.
When they are in the field they have to eat MRE's- food in a bag...
His wife Becky remains in California-  as his rock of Gibraltar - manning the homefront until he comes home safely again sending care packages herself to her hubby and his fellow marines as often as possible...Becky Vest was delighted to learn about Mrs.Hunter's first grade class and their interest in adopting her husband as their penpal.

" I am a Marine Wife and Now this comes FIRST...Making sure that my husband has everything that he needs and most of all he is Keeping us SAFE as we sleep. I am a stay at home mom and Taxi driver - taking kids everywhere. Thank you so much in all of your support. "

A Letter from Our Soldier Finally Coming Home

To All,

I would like to take this time to thank every one for their e-mail
and support while I was over here. I was suppose to rotate in July but have received orders to return back Camp Pendleton and will be leaving this week,
I promise to stay in touch once I get home. I ask that you don't forget about all our troops serving all over the world as they keep us safe from our enemies.  I would like to send a special thanks to Mrs. Hunter 1st grade class in California for adopting me and letting me be part of their life. It has started a friendship that will last for ever. I look forward to meeting her and her students in person to say thank you!

Becky, get out your prettiest dress, put beer on ice, have the Gin & Juice ready, and the cigars waiting... your old war dog is coming home. And one other thing, tell the neighbors if they should hear some loud noise at night not to worry! Your Marine has landed and the situation is well in hand!

Semper Fi!
